I was working on my weather internship a the county tornado watch center, when we began to monitor rapid wind movements. The way the winds were behaving indicated a high velocity tornado was quickly gathering strength. My supervisor made the call, he said “Johnny, sound the alarm,” and I jumped at the opportunity to sound the air horn. This was the first time I was monitoring an active tornado and was extremely excited to put out the warning. It is the same excitement tornado chasers feel as they drive toward the tornado just to intercept a tornado for some science data.
