Conflicting signs regarding fetal heart rate result in stillbirth
In this case a 22 year old pregnant woman, who was referred to a high risk clinic, underwent a biophysical profile which revealed no amniotic fluid presence and no fetal movement. The hospital admitted her for labor and delivery. She was febrile with a 100.1 temperature. After 20 minutes of unreadable results, the fetal heart rate monitoring showed 10 minutes of slow heartbeats at 50 per minute which was followed by straight line tracings. The woman could feel and was aware of the slowing and the stop of the fetal heartbeat. A sonogram, however, still indicated fetal life. The doctor performed a C-section in an attempt to save the baby. Yet the baby was stillborn.
