Our lives can be so full and complicated. We focus so much on getting “stuff” to help fill the voids or the emptiness we experience in our lives. I believe that as a species, we don’t fully recognize the importance of caring for our “spirit within”. We do not recognize the connection between spirituality and health.

There are many kinds of substance use and/or abuse. Alcohol is one of many. In general, people who have a drinking problem are people with a great deal of sensitivity. They might characterize themselves as caring but easily hurt by others. They may very well have grown up with family members who struggled with alcohol abuse. The problem drinker may have been victim to physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse/neglect. Many would say that the use of alcohol calms their emotions and removes the chronic doubt they experience.

Alcohol abuse is a real problem and real problems have real solutions. If you have a drinking problem, seek out someone whose judgement you trust and ask for help. Reach out and someone will reach back. It is possible to fill those voids with a healthy spirit.
